This prototype for Super Mario Bros. 2 appeared on eBay in mid/late 2005. Johan of Sweden purchased the game for a whopping $350. According to Johan, this copy of Super Mario Bros. 2 is very different from the version which hit shelves. For instance, the introduction/story is changed slightly. When the game starts, the player starts out with 19 lives. To aid the gamer even more, pressing select allows the gamer to take 10 hits before becoming small.
This game also has several interesting graphical differences. The potions are gone! Instead of potions, the lamps from Doki Doki panic are still implemented in this version of the game. The animation frames for POW blocks, grass patches, vines, cherries and oceans are yet to be implemented, and the waterfalls are running really fast. The bonus rooms are also different, as well as the ending screens. Lastly, holding the 'B' button does not allow Mario and crew to walk faster.
The biggest difference, however, might be the dungeon music. The dungeon music in this prototype is a remade version of the Super Mario Bros. dungeon music. Click here to listen to a sample of the new music.
Overall, this is a nice prototype of Super Mario Bros. 2. As Johan had mentioned to me, this game has MANY elements from Doki Doki Panic still implemented in it. This cartridge really seems to be a hybrid between our Super Mario Bros. 2 and Doki Doki Panic.
