| Title: The Best Of How To Win At Nintendo Games
Author: Jeff Rovin
Thoughts: Jeff Rovin's The Best Of How To Win At Nintendo Games is a compilation of Jeff's previous books. This book contains the greatest Nintendo hits of all time...according to the cover anyway. I personally find the Rovin books to be a bit dry. However, they are useful at times and this book is probably the best of the series.
|
| Title: Conquering Super Mario Bros.
Author: Steven Schwartz
Thoughts: Conquering Super Mario Bros. is an alright guide to the Super Mario Bros. series. Although the guide is not as detailed as Rovan's guides, Conquering Super Mario Bros. includes a few nice screenshots here and there. I guess you can't have you cake and eat it too.
|
| Title: Digital Press Collector's Guide 7
Editor in Chief: Joe Santulli
Thoughts: I will never go back to the day when I did not own a copy of Joe Santulli's Digital Press Collector's Guide. This book is a price\collector's guide for all of the classic videogame consoles out there, from NES and Atari to Spectrum Sinclair. Although the NES section of the book has a few flaws (Formula One: Built to Win is listed as being published by Sega. It was actually published by Seta.), it is still a great addition to any collector's book collection.
|
| Title: Digital Press PsychOPedia
Editor in Chief: Joe Santulli
Thoughts: The Digital Press PsychOPedia is a nice companion to the Digital Press Collector's Guide. Suppose you are interested in seeing all of the games that Nintendo published. Open the book to the Nintendo page and you will find a complete list of titles, for the various systems that Nintendo made games for. This book is easy to use and fun to look through.

| Title: Game Over: Press Start To Continue
Author: David Sheff
Thoughts: I remember buying this book on clearance from Electronics Botique for $1. The dude who rang it up thought that I wouldn't actually read the book---boy was he wrong. If you are interested in the history of Nintendo then you should buy this book. Game Over deals with the founding of Nintendo, the troubles they ran into, and it also discusses the tactics that Nintendo used to stop pirate and unlicensed game companies. A very good read.
|
| Title: Game Player's Encyclopedia Of Nintendo Games Volume Three
Thoughts: Game Player's Encyclopedia Of Nintendo Games Volume Three is a compilation containing articles from several of the Game Player's Strategy Guide To Nintendo Games magazines. These books are nice since they feature the hit articles from the magazine series. Hell, California Raisins is even in this book, as "Game of the Month."
|
| Title: Gamepro Presents: Nintendo Game Secrets Greatest Tips
Author: The Editors of Gamepro
Thoughts: I am still grabbing this book off the shelf from time to time. Gamepro's book is a great compilation of hints and cheats for over 200 popular (and not so popular...Metal Fighter) Nintendo games. With coverage for over 200 games, and over 1,001 tricks, I find this book very useful.
|
| Title: How To Win At Nintendo Games
Author: Jeff Rovin
Thoughts: Rovin's How To Win At Nintendo Games features some of the earlier Nintendo hits, including Castlevania, Ghosts 'N Goblins, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 2, Mega Man, Metroid, and Zelda II. I found this game very useful when playing Metroid. These books are now all fairly useless (thanks to free Internet walkthroughs); for its time this book was quite useful.
|
| Title: How To Win At Nintendo Games 4
Author: Jeff Rovin
Thoughts: Here we have the fourth book in Rovin's famous How To Win At Nintendo Games series. This book has such games as Castlevania III, Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Ninja Gaiden 2, and Final Fantasy. This guide also includes a chapter for Legend of Zelda---shouldn't this be included in volume one? Oh well.
|
| Title: How To Win At Super Mario Bros. Games
Author: Jeff Rovin
Thoughts: How To Win At Super Mario Bros. Games is a detailed book explaining strategies for all three Nintendo Super Mario Bros. games, and Super Mario Land for the Gameboy. I never really needed to refer to this book. However, a brief look tells me that beginning gamers would probably find it very useful.
|
| Title: Nintendo Game Secrets 3
Author: Rusel DeMaria & Zach Meston
Thoughts: In regards to Nintendo strategy guides, the Nintendo Game Secrets books were always a cut above the rest. The books featured tons of screenshots and easy-to-follow strategies allowing gamers to quickly progress through the popular Nintendo games of the time. Out of the four books (I own them all...one and two were used so hard that they are missing their covers...), parts three and four were my least favorite. The best information in this book is the chapters on Tale Spin, Dragon Warrior II, Uninvited, and Faria. Most of the other games are so obscure that they shouldn't be in a book like this.
|
| Title: Nintendo Game Secrets 4
Author: Rusel DeMaria & Zach Meston
Thoughts: I am glad that Nintendo Game Secrets 4 is the final book in the series. By the time volume four arrived, I felt that the authors were scraping the bottom of the barrel when choosing games to write about. With the exception of Mega Man 4, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 and King's Quest V, most of the games contained in this volume are just average plays.
|
| Title: Top Secret Passwords
Editor in Chief: Gail Tilden
Thoughts: I love this book. Top Secret Passwords is one of Nintendo's official players guides. It features codes for tons of Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and Gameboy games. The full-color pictures make this book a must buy.
|
| Title: Ultimate Unauthorized Classic Nintendo Game Strategies
Author: Corey Sandler & Tom Badgett
Thoughts: Don't let the fancy title deceive you, this book is not very useful. My brother was having trouble with some games back in the day, so he went to a book store and this was the book they had. Desperate, my brother bought the book. Only when he got it home did he realize that it wasn't too useful. Ultimate Unauthorized Classic Nintendo Game Strategies features information on many popular Nintendo series (Mega Man, Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda). The information that is provided, is very generic and useless. Needless to say, this book usually sits on the shelf at my house.
