Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout --- Kemco/Seika

I remember playing this game as a little kid. With most games, when you play them after years of sitting on the shelf, they're just not as fun as you remember. Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout is a prime example of how this does not always apply to all games. No matter how much games change, this game will always be fun to me...

The storyline is this, albeit, somewhat simple: It's bugs Bunny's 50th Birthday. His fan club is throwing him a giant bash in his honour. However, the rest of his Looney Tune friends are angry, after all, they never get parties! So off we go, the gang is trying to stop Bugs from getting to the party and only you can get him there, stopping to get carrots and extra points on the way... The carrots of course are used in a bonus round at the end of each stage to get extra lives.

Graphical, the game is nothing special. The average side scroller. A cool looking intro to each screen is somewhat remeniscent of the Famicom version of Super Mario Brothers 3. Sadly that is pretty much where the comparison ends. They both utilize the MMC3 and are side scrollers....So yeah.... However, the Pause screen is quite amazing. It's the current background screen without any sprites in it, but a neat Pause graphic pops up that actually spins vertically. You kind of have to see it to believe it but it looks Kirby's Adventure-ish graphically. I was always impressed by it.

In total there are 6 Worlds for Bugs to traverse, with four levels each equaling 24 levels in total. The Worlds include a Grassland World, a Desert World, A Mountain world, a Forest World and a Cave World. There is a boss at the end of each level which is of course one of the Looney Tune pals. Sadly the bosses are weak in comparison to the level difficulty as in sooo many NES games, especially the last one *cough*Bowser*cough*.... The final boss is suprisingly the Tasmanian Devil who throws footballs at you that you have to knock back using Bugs' weapon, a giant hammer.

The controls are actually quite amazing. They respond very well mid-air or mid-death. The second best controls I possibly ever used on the NES. The graphics were mediocre as stated above but the gameplay is superb. Not to mention the twist ending. Only bad points would have to be the tedious music and the bosses difficulty.

I give it a 8/10.

Bad points: Music, Bosses too easy
