Sack of Flour, Heart of Gold

My brother Calx had recently informed me of a new Nintendo game in the works. He didn't provide me with many details; he did provide refer me to this site. Calx said that this new game was going to be big. I checked out the website, I downloaded the rom, I realized that the NES game Sack of Flour: Heart of Gold is a major happening in the NES scene.

Sack of Flour (SoF) is a visually appealing game; the graphics remind me of something that would fit well with Super Mario Bros. or Wario Land. In terms of gameplay, SoF is interesting. The game is a platform game. There are two "sides" to each stage, a front side and its flipside. You must make your well through the stages by going in and out of different doors. Oh and your character is a Sack of Flour :)

Sack of Flour is one of the better homebrewn NES games I've played, especially since it is only at version 1b. Unlike most of the other homebrewn NES games, Sack of Flour is being designed by a whole team of programmers, musicians, and graphics artists. Below is a bit more information provided for me by Bob Rost.

Bob Rost: Completed his Computer Science degree, beginning Masters of Entertainment Technology. Project lead.

Matt Longnecker: Now a senior in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Wrote the awesome level editor and worked on hardware support.

Andrew Klein: Now a junior Art major. Made all the graphics, finalized levels so they look pretty, helped alot with the early plot designs and some of the main plot that made it into the "final" game. Most recently, he made the box art, which is on our downloads page.

Mark Hall: Now a junior Music major. Wrote all the game music. Some of it was originally composed in MIDI, but all of it was eventually composed in Nesumus.

Mike Raisman: Now a senior Math major. Helped alot at the end to design and create the levels.

A History of SoF This is a short paragraph about the game Sack of Flour. I (TRM) wrote this article based on information Bob had told me. Anyway around late 2000/early 2001 someone had made a rom hack of Legend of Zelda which had gained alot of recognition on Slashdot. Bob tried the game and he thought it was a very poor NES rom hack; he said that he could make a better game than that. Bob went to the NES Dev site and he decided that he actually would make a "good" NES game. The reason Bob was prompted to choose a Sack of Flour as the main character was because of a picture of a Sack of Flour that Bob had seen. The picture showed the SoF in all sorts of emotional states, which is sued to show that in the disney sort of animation. Bob asked the academic advisor if he could get credit for making a NES game. The advisor said yes and the rest is history! I'll keep you informed on this awesome project.
