The Development of Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3 has always been one of my favorite videogames of all time. The game had been a mile stone in Nintendo history. Released in 1990, Super Mario Bros. 3 had provided gamers with hour upon hour of excitement, challenge and fun. The game was chalk full with coins, secrets, power-ups and hidden areas, to keep gamers guessing time and time again. As one can imagine, Super Mario Bros. 3 had been the efforts of hard work and careful designing.

Bowser's Castle Stage 4-4 Background Sprites

Super Mario Bros. 3 had started to undergo development in 1988. Shigeru Miyamoto had been the man behind SMB3 since the beginning. A team of approximately 10 or 12 people had been behind the development of Mario 3. Game ideas were first circulated among the development team. Parts of the team (the artists) had then drawn out detailed drawings of the game---this included levels, characters, and power-ups.

The Koopa Kids Bad Boy Bowser

One of the things which had set Super Mario Bros. 3 above some of the other games of the time was the variety of enemies and weapons. Lots of the familiar enemies had made appearances, but other spin-offs of these characters were also created. Throw in the seven Koopa Kids, each with varying personality, and the game was sure to be a hit. The weapons were also a great improvement for Mario. Mario was not just limited to Super Mario and Fire Mario, he was also given the ability to fly, turn into a statue, and throw hammers. One of the ideas which was scrapped was having Mario be able to turn into a Centaur. The vast multitude of weapons and enemies added to the complexity and excitement of the game.

Artist, Programmer & Musician

The driest part of designing Super Mario Bros. 3 would have been programming the actual game. Several dedicated programmers had to convert all of the ideas from paper to graphics and game code. However long and time consuming it may have been, the development stayed strong and had Super Mario Bros. 3 released in early 1990.
