Super Mario Bros. 2 & the "Lost Levels"
The Super Mario Bros. saga continued one night when Mario had a dream. When Mario awoke the next day, he had a picnic with his companions. When Mario opened a door he found in a cave, he was transported to his dreamland. That's how the American version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was introduced.
Super Mario Bros. 2 was very different from its predecessor due to the fact that it wasn't originally a Mario Bros. game...ever wonder where that Arabian feel came from? Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally a disk system game released for the Famicom Disk System, an add on for the Famicom. Fugi released Dream Factory Doki Doki Pacnic, the SMB2 predecessor. The game featured a few Arab people who were searching for their children, who were kidnapped by the evil Wart. The converted Doki Doki Panic game was also released in Japan, as Super Mario USA.
What was the Japanese version Super Mario Bros. 2? It is known as the "lost levels" over in the states. The game is a continuation of the original Super Mario Bros. game. The game features new challenges such as poisonous mushrooms, warp zones that back track, and deadly winds. Luigi and Mario also have different jumping abilities.
The question that has yet to be answered is why wasn't the Japanese Mario sequel released in the US? Several theories exist. Some people felt that the game would be too hard for American gamers (kinda insulting). Others thought that the game would be disliked since it was so similar to Super Mario Bros. Anyway, we should be glad that the "real" Super Mario Bros. 2 was released on the SNES and Gameboy Color.
