Former Tengen programmer, Steve Woita was involved with the Police Academy game for the Nintendo. You may remember Steve, he sometimes make's appearances at the Classic Games conventions and such, a cool guy.

Police Academy was most likely based off of the cartoon of the same name, aired in the 1980s.

Steve tells me that Police Academy had been programmed by him; it needed only a month or so to be completed. The game play tested well. One of Tengen's "bigwigs" told Steve to stop that project; they hired a new team to work on a Police Academy game.

The new Police Academy game was a Super Mario Bros. 2 clone, according to Steve it was horrible so it was not released. It's a wonder that Tengen had taken a good game and scrapped it for an inferior version which was canned as well.
